US-China Joint Symposium on Science for Enhancing Climate Resilience and Promoting Planetary Health
November 10-13, 2024
Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center and Hilton Palacio del Rio Hotel in San Antonio, Texas, US
Organizers: Wei Zhang, Michigan State University (weizhang@msu.edu); Michael L. Thompson, Iowa State University (mlthomps@iastate.edu); Xiaoyuan Yan (yanxy@issas.ac.cn) and Fang Wang (wangfang@issas.ac.cn), Institute of Soil Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Background
Humanity is facing many grand challenges in rapid population growth, expanding urbanization, land degradation, biodiversity loss, and climate change. We must produce enough safe, nutritious food and provide healthy habitats for the Earth’s population that will reach 9.8 billion people by 2050 amidst climate change, land degradation, water scarcity, environmental pollution, etc. Overcoming these obstacles need international collaborations to promote crop production for global food security, managing soil resources, agriculture, and natural ecosystems for climate resilience, remediate polluted lands for safe agricultural production and living environment, and preserving functions of urban, forest, range, wildland, wetland, and grassland ecosystems. The US-China agreements on climate change actions announced at Glasgow in 2021 and at Sunnylands in 2023 demonstrate the need and vision for international collaboration on global challenges. These challenges present great opportunities for scientists in soil science, agronomy, crop, and environmental sciences to collaborate. To this end, Soil Science Society of America and Soil Science Society of China plan to alternately host annual US-China joint symposia on soil science to facilitate scientific exchange and build collaborations among scientists from both countries, which can serve as a model for engagement of scientific societies across the globe. We will discuss successes made and lessons learned in our collective understanding of soil, climate, water, food, and environment nexus and in developing digital agriculture, sustainable cropping systems, novel soil remediation technologies, climate change adaption and mitigation measures, and effective ecosystem protection approaches. This year’s symposium is organized by the SSSA-SSSC Joint Working Group and will be the inaugural symposium for the planned US-China annual joint symposia series on soil science alternately hosted by SSSA or SSSC.
