SSSA Calls for Society-to-Society Scientific Collaboration

On behalf of the Soil Science Society of America (SSSA), SSSA’s committee to develop collaborative scientific efforts with the Soil Science Society of China (SSSC) recently published a letter on the topic of collaboration in the journal Perspectives of Earth and Space Scientists. The letter can be accessed at SocietyToSociety Collaboration Between the United States and China: A Path Forward - Thompson - 2024 - Perspectives of Earth and Space Scientists - Wiley Online Library. The letter contends that members of SSSA have a stake in maintaining and strengthening open science with international collaborators, including their counterparts in China. “Collaboration and communication across national boundaries are essential not only for basic sciences like physics and chemistry but also for science that is focused on climate change, agriculture, forestry, and environmental issues of all kinds — which are also considered fundamental research,” the letter states. The SSSA committee noted that in recent years SSSA and SSSC have worked to promote joint society memberships, produce joint webinars, organize joint sessions in annual meetings, and develop joint publications. The letter invites other scientific organizations to explore similar kinds of engagement with scientists in China.
