From 1 to 2 April 2023, the 4th academic forum on nitrogen biochemical cycling in soils was hosted by the Nitrogen Working Group, SSSC, the Commission on Environmental Geography, Geographical Society of China and the East Asia Centre of the International Nitrogen Initiative in Peking University. The forum was attended by more than 500 representatives from 149 universities, research institutes and companies, with a total of 14,477 live viewers.

To promote communication and collaboration in nitrogen cycle, the forum had 9 plenary papers, 18 invited papers, 53 oral papers and 40 posters to discuss topics such as “key processes and mechanisms of nitrogen cycle”, “release mechanisms and effects of reactive nitrogen”, “sustainable nitrogen management and policies”, and “new techniques and methods in nitrogen cycle research”. At this forum, the list of Top Ten Nitrogen Cycle Advancements for 2021 was announced.

The forum was aimed to innovate nitrogen cycle theories, research methods and management strategies and motivate multidisciplinary collaboration including soil science, hydroscience, atmospheric science, microbiology, environmental geoscience, marine science and management.
